Reflective Discussion Assignment: Detailed Guidelines

Objective

The goal of this assignment is for you to engage in a deep, introspective reflection on your personal beliefs and insights related to Advance Care Planning and healthcare reform. You will also be expected to relate these reflections to one of the South University College of Nursing and Public Health Conceptual Framework Pillars to better demonstrate how nursing principles guide your judgment and decision-making process.

1. Content Expectations

Your reflection should demonstrate a thoughtful and reflective analysis of how personal beliefs, societal factors, and professional values influence decisions regarding healthcare reform, especially when dealing with imperfect legislation. The following elements should be covered:

a. Personal Reflection

  • Reflect on your thoughts and beliefs regarding healthcare reform legislation, especially when the legislation may not be perfect. What factors (personal, professional, ethical, or political) influence your ability to support reform that may have shortcomings?
  • Discuss your decision-making process: How do you reconcile personal or political biases with your professional role as a nurse? Are you more likely to prioritize patient-centered care and public health needs over political affiliations or preferences?
  • Consider moral dilemmas that may arise when healthcare reforms clash with personal or party beliefs. How do you maintain a stance focused on patient advocacy and equitable healthcare delivery?

b. Connect to South University Conceptual Framework

  • Link your reflections to one or more of the following pillars from South University’s College of Nursing and Public Health Conceptual Framework:
    • Caring: How does the principle of caring influence your perspective on healthcare reform and decision-making? How does caring for patients as individuals shape your support for policies that prioritize their well-being?
    • Communication: Explore how effective communication with patients, families, and colleagues plays a role in understanding and navigating healthcare policies and reforms.
    • Critical Thinking: How does the ability to think critically help you assess the potential benefits and challenges of healthcare reform policies, particularly when they conflict with personal or political views?
    • Professionalism: How does professionalism guide your decision-making in the context of supporting healthcare reforms? Does professionalism demand that you separate personal beliefs from professional actions in clinical settings?
    • Holism: Reflect on how a holistic perspective influences your decision-making. Does your belief in treating the whole patient affect your support for healthcare legislation that may impact multiple aspects of patient care?

Important: You may choose to connect to more than one pillar, depending on how your reflection unfolds. Be sure to explain why and how you selected the particular pillars and how they inform your thought process.

2. Format Expectations

a. Structure:

  • Introduction: Briefly introduce the topic of advance care planning and healthcare reform. State the purpose of the reflection.
  • Main Body: This is where you’ll analyze the topic by addressing the personal, professional, and ethical factors involved in supporting healthcare reform despite its imperfections. Make connections to the Conceptual Framework.
  • Conclusion: Summarize your insights and explain how your reflections inform your nursing practice and your role in healthcare reform.

b. Writing Style:

  • 300-400 words: Be clear and concise. Use the space effectively to express your insights without over-explaining.
  • APA 7th Edition: Format your paper according to APA 7th edition guidelines, ensuring correct citation, reference page formatting, and appropriate in-text citations.
    • Font: Use 11 pt Calibri or 12 pt Times New Roman.
    • Spacing: Double-space with 1-inch margins. Avoid extra spacing between paragraphs.
    • Title Page: Include a title page with the title of your paper, your name, and your course details.
    • In-text citations: Cite at least one course textbook reference and one external scholarly source.
    • References page: Include a references page formatted correctly in APA style.

3. Analytical Depth

In addition to discussing your personal beliefs, focus on the following analytical areas:

a. Political Influence:

  • Acknowledge that political views can affect opinions on healthcare reforms. However, explore how your role as a nurse—focused on patient care and the public good—helps you navigate any political biases.
  • Reflect on how you, as a nurse, must sometimes place patient interests above political ideologies to ensure access to quality care, equity, and justice.

b. Patient-Centered Care:

  • Discuss how patient-centered care principles affect your decisions when supporting policies like healthcare reform. Do you feel that reform often prioritizes individual patient needs, or are there areas where it may not address the full spectrum of care a patient needs?

c. Ethical Dilemmas:

  • Explore any ethical dilemmas you face when choosing to support healthcare reform policies that may not fully align with your personal beliefs. For example, should a nurse advocate for reform even if certain parts of it seem flawed or insufficient?

4. Engagement Expectations

a. Peer Interaction:

  • Engage with peer posts in the discussion area. This is not just about responding, but about creating constructive dialogues that foster deeper reflection on the topic.
  • Aim to contribute meaningfully by providing feedback, offering new perspectives, or asking thought-provoking questions to peers.

b. Faculty Participation:

  • Be open to faculty feedback on your reflection. This is an opportunity for you to enhance your insights and improve your critical thinking abilities.

5. Grading Criteria

a. Content Quality:

  • Your reflection should be well-organized and logically presented. Ensure that your reflection is thoughtful, clearly addresses the topic, and provides meaningful analysis based on course concepts.

b. Application of Conceptual Framework:

  • How well do you link your reflection to the South University College of Nursing and Public Health Conceptual Framework? Make clear connections to the specific pillars you discuss.

c. APA Format:

  • Ensure that you follow APA formatting for both in-text citations and reference list. Proper structure, citations, and references are critical to receiving full credit.

d. Peer Participation:

  • You will be graded not only on your initial post but also on how actively and constructively you engage with your peers in the discussion.

6. Resources for Success

  • Review the APA 7th Edition guidelines for citation and formatting, available in your South University Online Library.
  • Make use of APA resources such as:
    • APA Citation Helper
    • APA Citations Quick Sheet
    • APA-Style Formatting Guidelines
  • Academic sources: Use credible and scholarly sources such as journal articles or books that are current and relevant to your topic. Be sure to cite them correctly using APA formatting.

By following these expanded guidelines, you’ll be able to provide a comprehensive and well-organized reflective discussion on the complex issues surrounding healthcare reform and advance care planning. Your ability to connect these personal insights to nursing practice and ethical standards will be key to a strong submission.
