March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world.
When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP.
In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.
To Prepare:
Review the Resources and reflect on the definition and goal of EBP.
Choose a professional healthcare organization’s website (e.g., a reimbursing body, an accredited body, or a national initiative).
Explore the website to determine where and to what extent EBP is evident.
Post a description of the healthcare organization website you reviewed. Describe where, if at all, EBP appears (e.g., the mission, vision, philosophy, and/or goals of the healthcare organization, or in other locations on the website). Then, explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not. Finally, explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization. Be specific and provide examples.

For this discussion, you will focus on a professional healthcare organization’s website and analyze the extent to which it incorporates evidence-based practice (EBP). Here’s a suggested approach to completing this assignment:

  1. Choose a Healthcare Organization Website:

    • Select a professional healthcare organization that is relevant to your field. This could include an accrediting body, a reimbursing agency, or a national healthcare initiative.
    • Some examples might include:
      • The American Nurses Association (ANA)
      • The Joint Commission (for hospital accreditation)
      • The World Health Organization (WHO)
      • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  2. Explore the Website:

    • Look for areas on the website where evidence-based practice is mentioned. This may appear in sections like the mission, vision, or philosophy of the organization.
    • See if there are specific guidelines, resources, or research linked to evidence-based practice.
    • Check if the website mentions any initiatives, programs, or projects that are grounded in evidence-based practice.
  3. Provide a Detailed Description:

    • In your post, describe the healthcare organization and its mission.
    • Highlight where EBP appears on the website, whether explicitly or implicitly. For example:
      • Does the organization state that it values EBP in its mission statement?
      • Are there specific sections dedicated to research or clinical guidelines that demonstrate an EBP approach?
  4. Analyze the Role of EBP:

    • Reflect on whether the healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP. Consider the following questions:
      • Are their policies and recommendations based on current research or best practices?
      • Does the organization promote the use of data to inform decision-making and improve patient outcomes?
  5. Reflection on Your Perception:

    • Finally, explain if your perception of the organization has changed after reviewing their website.
    • Provide examples of how the incorporation (or lack thereof) of EBP influenced your view of the organization.

Sample Structure for Your Post:

  1. Introduction: Briefly introduce the healthcare organization and its focus.
  2. Description of the Website: Highlight where EBP is evident (mission, vision, research, clinical guidelines, etc.).
  3. Analysis: Discuss whether the organization’s work is grounded in EBP and explain why or why not.
  4. Conclusion: Reflect on how this analysis changed or reinforced your perception of the organization.

Resources:

  • Relevant scholarly articles and resources provided for this course (e.g., Melnyk et al., 2010; Boller, 2017; Crabtree et al., 2016).

By following this structure and incorporating critical analysis, you will be able to address all aspects of the discussion.
