Step 1: Choosing a Current Event

The first task is to find a news article or media story that highlights a significant event from this week. Your event should have enough depth to be analyzed from a psychological perspective. Here’s how you can go about selecting your current event:

  1. Find a News Article: Check reputable news websites like BBC, CNN, The New York Times, or even local news sources to find current stories. Ensure the event is substantial enough for analysis (political, societal, scientific, etc.).
  2. Summarize the Event: Write a brief 3-sentence summary of the event. Be concise while including the key aspects of the story. Here’s an example: Example: “This week, researchers discovered a significant breakthrough in Alzheimer’s treatment. A new drug has shown promise in slowing the progression of the disease. This discovery has raised hopes for millions affected by dementia-related disorders.”
  3. Include the Article Link: Provide a link to the article you used for your summary.

Step 2: Identify Three Course Topics

Once you’ve chosen your event, the next step is to choose three topics from the list provided. These topics will help you connect psychological concepts to the event. Here’s how to approach this:

  1. Select Topics: Choose three topics from the following list:
    • Sensation & Perception
    • Lifespan Psychology
    • Consciousness
    • Biopsychology
    • Learning
    • Memory
    • Thinking, Language, and Intelligence
  2. Explain the Topics: Write a two-sentence explanation for each of the three topics you chose. Here’s an example for Sensation & Perception: “Sensation and perception refer to how we receive and interpret stimuli from the environment. Sensation involves the physical process of detecting stimuli, while perception involves interpreting and making sense of those stimuli.”

Repeat this process for the other two topics you selected.

Step 3: Apply the Topics to the Current Event

Now, apply your selected psychological topics to the current event. You should analyze how each psychological concept connects to the event. Follow these steps for each of your three topics:

  1. Sensation & Perception:
    • Connect it to the Event: Explain how the topic applies to the event you selected. For example, if your event involves a scientific discovery, you can talk about how sensory data is interpreted by researchers and the public.
    • Use Examples: Support your analysis with specifics from the article. For example, you might mention how people’s perceptions of the new Alzheimer’s treatment could influence their willingness to try it.
  2. Lifespan Psychology:
    • Connect it to the Event: How does this topic relate to the event, particularly in terms of age or life stages? For example, if your event is about an educational trend, you could talk about how it affects people at different ages.
    • Use Examples: Link it to real-life situations or specific individuals mentioned in the article.
  3. Memory:
    • Connect it to the Event: Analyze how memory plays a role in the event. For example, if the event relates to a political decision, you might discuss how memory and recall influence public opinion or political behavior.
    • Use Examples: Provide evidence from the article to show how memory impacts the event or situation.

Step 4: Reflection

In this final step, reflect on how analyzing the event from a psychological perspective has helped you understand the situation better.

  1. Did this analysis change your understanding of the event?: Reflect on how applying psychology to the event gave you new insights or a different perspective on the story.
  2. How does this activity enhance your appreciation for psychology in everyday life?: Consider how using psychology to analyze real-world events deepens your understanding of human behavior and decision-making.

Step 5: Conclusion

End your paper by briefly summarizing the key insights you gained from applying psychology to the current event. Reinforce the importance of psychology in understanding real-world issues.

Step 6: Citations and Formatting

  • Cite Your Article: Make sure to include a works cited page where you list the article you used. Follow the appropriate citation style (APA, MLA, etc.).
  • Formatting: Your paper should be double-spaced, in 12 pt. font. Follow all the formatting guidelines provided by your instructor.
