Overview- topic- Big Tabacco
In this assignment, you will create a collection of sources in preparation for your project, an Advocacy Action Plan that investigates and outlines the historical foundations of a social movement or an interest group of your choosing. Creating a collection of sources will help you investigate your chosen social movement or interest group, explain strategies used by your chosen movement or interest group to advocate for change, and advocate for social change. Taking this step to briefly summarize each source and consider how it relates to your project will ensure you have collected credible sources that will support your ideas. Sometimes this step is called creating an annotated bibliography, and the analysis of each source is called an annotation.
Directions
First, review the Project Guidelines and Rubric in the Supporting Materials section. Next, locate four sources that will support your project. Include sources from the Library Guide and your independent research, and be sure to use resources from diverse perspectives. This means looking for sources whose authors come from a variety of backgrounds and represent different viewpoints. Having different perspectives also means recognizing how the author’s background may influence the content. Consider using sources from a mix of different cultures, genders, socioeconomic backgrounds, educational backgrounds, or political affiliations, to ensure that a variety of voices are included.
Then, create annotations for each of the four sources. In each annotation, you will summarize the source, evaluate the source’s credibility, and explain how the source is relevant to the social movement or affiliated interest group you chose for your project. Consider how you can use the SIFT method in the course Library Guide as you evaluate the credibility of your sources. Also think about how you can prevent bias, misinformation, and/or disinformation from impacting your research. Refer to the APA Style Guide for details on how to provide a citation for the source.
Specifically, you must address the following:
Provide an APA-style citation for each source that would appear in your Reference list.
Provide a brief summary of each source. Include the following in your response:
What is the main idea?
What are two to three key points?
Evaluate the credibility of each source.
Explain how the source is relevant to the social movement or affiliated interest group.
Determine how the perspective of each source contributes to your understanding of the social movement or affiliated interest group.

Step 1: Review the Project Guidelines and Rubric

  • Understand the Requirements: Carefully read the project guidelines and rubric to understand the expectations for your Advocacy Action Plan. This will help you determine what your sources need to cover and how they will fit into your overall project.
  • Focus on Big Tobacco: Your topic is Big Tobacco. You will be investigating the historical foundations of this social movement or interest group and looking at how it has used strategies to advocate for change.

Step 2: Locate and Select Your Sources

  • Find Four Credible Sources: Locate four sources for your research. Use the Library Guide as well as independent research to gather your sources. Ensure you choose resources from diverse perspectives. For example, one source could focus on the historical role of Big Tobacco in shaping public policy, while another might provide a modern perspective on anti-smoking advocacy.
  • Consider Diverse Perspectives: It’s important to select sources that come from authors with different backgrounds, such as varying political affiliations, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This will give you a balanced understanding of the topic.

Step 3: Write the APA Citation for Each Source

  • APA Format: For each source, provide an APA-style citation. This should follow the format:
    • Books: Author, A.A. (Year). Title of work. Publisher.
    • Journal Articles: Author, A.A. (Year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume number(issue number), pages.
    • Websites: Author, A.A. (Year, Month Date). Title of webpage. Website name. URL

Step 4: Write the Annotation for Each Source

For each source, include the following sections:

  1. Summary of the Source:
    • Main Idea: What is the main point of the source? For instance, does it discuss the history of Big Tobacco’s influence on politics, or does it provide an analysis of public health efforts to reduce smoking rates?
    • Key Points: Highlight two or three important points from the source. This might include data, arguments, or strategies used by Big Tobacco or its critics.
  2. Evaluation of Credibility:
    • Consider the author’s qualifications, publication source, and reliability. Is the source peer-reviewed? Is the author an expert in the field? For example, if the source is a journal article from a medical or policy journal, it is likely to be credible. If the source is from an opinion-based website, it may need further scrutiny.
    • SIFT Method: Use the SIFT method to check the credibility. This stands for Source, Information, Finding, and Thinking critically.
  3. Relevance to Your Project:
    • Explain how the source contributes to your understanding of Big Tobacco. For example, does the source provide historical context, current perspectives, or advocacy strategies?
    • How does this source help in supporting your analysis or argument for the Advocacy Action Plan?
  4. Perspective of the Source:
    • Consider how the author’s perspective influences the content. Does the source have a particular bias (e.g., pro-smoking or anti-smoking)? How does this perspective affect your understanding of the social movement or interest group?

Step 5: Apply the SIFT Method

  • SIFT: Review the SIFT method in the course Library Guide to ensure that you’re evaluating the credibility of each source. This method will help you assess whether the information is accurate and trustworthy, focusing on the Source of the information, the Information provided, the Findings, and your overall Thinking about the reliability of the source.

Step 6: Avoid Bias and Misinformation

  • Be mindful of bias, misinformation, and disinformation. Always check the credibility of your sources and ensure they provide factual, well-supported arguments. If a source seems biased, counterbalance it with perspectives from different authors.

Step 7: Finalizing Your Annotations

  • Ensure Clarity and Precision: Make sure each annotation is clear and concise, following the APA format and accurately summarizing the source’s key points and relevance.
  • Use Proper Citation Format: Review the APA Style Guide for accurate citation formatting. This is important to ensure you meet the assignment’s requirements.
